Can watching TV series improve my oral FLUENCY?

Can Watching TV Series Improve My Oral FLUENCY?

What is "Fluency"?

1. Your speech rate will be faster and smoother;

2. Natural pauses are also taken care of;

3. Automatically retrieve words;

4. Effectively and appropriately manage interruption (with social graces)

How to improve oral fluency is a big problem in the minds of English learners!

Maybe you've memorized 5,000 words; you know grammar very well; you can also read a long article quickly......

But you cannot or are afraid to speak English fluently!

If you have social phobia or lack opportunities to practice speaking with others, these are not problems.

It's time for TECHNOLOGY to help you change!

(This is a dividing line that shields seriousness)

There is an interesting way that you can help your students to promote oral fluency.

👉   Practice your speaking with TV Series

I believe that many of you have your own favourite TV series, such as Harry Potter, Friends, the Modern Family and so on......

So why not improve your English while having fun?

I found a treasure blogger whose channel you can find TV series that interest you!

By listening, following and imitating, you can gradually and naturally learn the native speaker's accent, liaison and slur words.

“Keep it fun, make it a habit”

💬   Tips

1. Watch with subtitles.

2. Pay attention to the intonation, stress, liaison and slur words.

3. Practice (repeat) several times, and you can speed up the playback.

4. Watch the accompanying video explanation if you have time.

💻   Here is an example:

👉   Limitations

1. Sometimes it is time-consuming if you repeat it several times;

2. Require learners' autonomy;

3. Young learners might not be free to access technology;

💓   Possible solutions

1. Teachers can involve such videos in classroom activity design. It is also a demonstration. Students can learn how to effectively use this method to practise fluency, and practise at home. Use a 2-3 minutes clip, and play it several times in the classroom. And then, group students. Let them play a role-playing game based on the video. In this way can not only achieve the purpose of practice, but also stimulate their motivation for learning.

2. Make watching videos homework, but don't make it a burden. The teacher can set it up once a week, and invite students to write a weekly learning Journal (share videos they watched; evaluate their changes in fluency; reflect on some problems and ask their teacher or classmates for help).

💟 💟 💟 Hope it helps~

  1. Hi Suri :) I've seen some part of videos from Learn English With TV Series on Instagram and just didn't know it was this tool! I did wonder who made these fun clips! It gives expression and many other examples using the same from other videos, I liked this point the most. Learners can face different accents and contexts as well as repeating expression. But as watching the SpongeBob, I realised watching whole part of video could be time-consuming as you pointed out!

    1. Hi Suji, thanks for your comment~ I would say it is a really interesting way to learn English through TV series, but I think it may take a long time to see the results! My advice is to choose what really interests you and make it a habit. Being too purposeful and focused on short-term results can be stressful (I experienced that 😢).

You should know how to motivate your students!

You Should Know How To Motivate Your Students! I guess one of the things that a lot of English teachers struggle with is how to make the classroom both productive and fun. In other words, how to stimulate your students' enthusiasm for classroom participation? Please imagine your students are drowsy, in a daze, or unwilling to answer your question. What an embarrassing thing it is!  Is my class so boring?  😨 Don't worry about that! You should know:    The teaching environment in particular needs to be sensitive to changes and adapt to the learners' current needs, learning content and preferences (Kaur & Naderajan, 2019).  In this digital age, technological innovation has created many learning tools. These tools help improve the effectiveness of language teaching according to the changing educational environment. In theory, fun and competitive games increase students' responsiveness and participation in the learning process and motivate them, which helps students ach

The guideline for students is clear. Students can get a clear idea of what the class is about from the "introduction". And students will be guided to the next step of learning and do some thinking activities. Then they will also be shown an evaluative criterion t
